What causes skin redness (diffuse redness)?
There are many different reasons for why your face may appear red. The first and most important question is:
Is it red all the time, or, do you experience flare-ups?
If you answered “all the time,” you may be experiencing something called rosacea, which is caused by broken or damaged blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin. A hypersensitivity to the sun and other environmental factors cause the blood vessels near the surface of the skin to expand and make the area appear flushed. Symptoms may be triggered or aggravated by extreme shifts in temperature, spicy foods and hot drinks, alcohol, sunlight, exercise, skincare products, drugs that dilate the blood vessels and even emotions.
(Active acne can also cause and/or exacerbate the appearance of rosacea.)
How can I determine the source and extent of redness?
We are able to analyze the skin with our Vectra Diagnostic Imaging. This non-invasive imaging software determines the extent of reds and browns beneath the skin. Once we determine the severity of the issue(s), we can recommend treatment strategies based on your level of comfort, desired outcome, timeline, and budget as well as track progress through the treatment series.
What areas can I have treated for redness?
Redness is found most commonly in the midface area, namely the cheeks, chin, and nose. However, redness can also be treated on the neck, chest, and almost any other part of the body.
What is the best treatment for redness?
The best treatment for redness may not be what you expect. After all, most creams and makeup only cover up the appearance of redness, rather than targeting the cause. For the most part, the best treatment for redness should involve cellular turnover, or the removal of dead and damaged skin cells. This helps keep the skin fresh, pores tight, and blood vessels under control. We can achieve careful and precise cellular turnover through professional exfoliation techniques and laser treatments.
