At Regain Functional Medicine + Aesthetics, we offer more than your typical weight loss program in Lawrence. That’s because we want you to achieve your ideal body weight, AND we care about improving your overall health.
We align our practice with the methods of functional medicine, a branch of wellness that prompts us to understand the biological and environmental factors that are preventing weight loss.
Here’s how we address those barriers to help you live a longer, healthier life.
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
The owner of Regain, Dr. Kathy Gaumer, MD, FACOG, is passionate about BHRT and has made it a cornerstone of this practice.
While not everyone expects hormones to play a significant role in their weight fluctuations, unbalanced hormones can impact:
- Appetite
- Satiety (sense of fullness)
- Body fat distribution
- Body fat accumulation
- Metabolism (process of breaking down food and using it for energy)
Before we start you on any medical weight loss program, we test your levels of estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, and thyroid to check for any imbalances and get you feeling right again. This therapy complements appetite-reducing medications, addressing your weight gain issues.
GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 medications, like semaglutide and tirzepatide, mimic the glucagon-like polypeptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone that signals to your brain that you’re full and should stop eating. Weekly injections or daily oral pills essentially “trick” your brain into thinking you’re satisfied with smaller meal portions, allowing you to maintain a calorie deficit.
Tirzepatide also mimics the gastric-inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) hormone, which offers further benefits of glucose regulation and appetite control.
GLP-1 medications work best for long-term use and for people looking to lose significant weight.
Note: Compounded Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are only provided pursuant to a valid prescription for each individual patient after evaluation by a trained medical professional. This medication is a compounded product; the FDA does not evaluate compounded medications for safety or efficacy. This medication is provided under the supervision of a licensed prescriber.
Phentermine
Phentermine is another appetite suppressant that targets the chemicals in your brain to promote feelings of being satiated. This makes it a stimulant, boosting your energy and fueling your workouts.
This medication is best for patients looking to lose 15 pounds or fewer and is only offered for a short-term duration. After your weight loss, we’ll use a maintenance plan with a lower dose or have you take your medication every other week.
Nutritional Guidance
With a reduced appetite, you’re eating less, which makes what you consume matter that much more. Our team will help you learn about the importance of choosing nutrient-dense foods, and how to choose the best proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that can fuel your body throughout the day.
For patients who are not on any appetite suppressants, we will teach you the importance of replacements rather than restriction. Because you’ll be active, we help you pick energy-boosting, filling, and nutritious food choices.
Exercise Recommendations
Exercising and moving your body can help you slim down. We recommend starting with light aerobic exercises that get your heart pumping so you can slowly build stamina and work your way up to strength training.
