As you get older, the changes your body brings can ignite a whole new array of aches, pains, sweats and emotions. Some of these are caused simply by stress, lack of sleep, or major life events. However, it’s important to take note of specific symptoms and take into consideration your age. When our body ages, the ability to produce necessary hormones, decreases. This decline can cause an array of symptoms and signal the beginning of a process called menopause.
What Is Menopause?
Menopause is the process of a woman’s body stopping her menstruation. In the process, there is also a decrease of the hormones estrogen and progesterone produced by the ovaries. Because of these decreased levels, the body has an imbalance and starts to experience side effects. There are three stages of menopause:
- Perimenopause
- Menopause
- Postmenopause
While there are estimates of when the menopause process begins, there is no exact age. There are also variables to take into consideration such as surgeries, damage to the ovaries, or hysterectomies, that can affect when menopause starts. However, if we strictly look at the natural menopause cycle, we can see some common symptoms that women experience. Once these symptoms are detected, it allows for the opportunity to seek relief for them early on, such as BHRT. Let’s take a look at what symptoms to be watching for.
Hot Flashes
A hot flash is quite literally a sudden burst of heat that can radiate in your chest or entire body. This symptom is very common for most women to experience. There is no change of temperature in the room, but you may get red and blotchy or feel flushed. The intensity of these hot flashes can last for seconds or even minutes at a time. Women typically experience these flashes one to two years after their final menstrual cycle.
Many women reportedly feel less of an interest in having sex during menopause. This could be due to the lower amounts of estrogen being produced by the body. However, this is not always the case. Some women report feeling and increase in their sexual interest after menopause.
Vaginal Dryness
Also attributed to the body’s lowered production of estrogen and progesterone, some women experience vaginal dryness that can lead to pain during sex. Itching, burning or stinging are also common symptoms affiliated with vaginal dryness. While this can pertain to all women, it is often more of an issue with menopausal women. An easy way to fix vaginal dryness is to use a water-based lubricant or a vaginal cream.
