When you put effort into your appearance, it shows. From proper diet and exercise to keep you looking healthy and energetic, to your hair, fashion, and more—you’ve got it going on!
But…and there’s always a “but”…those extra chin hairs are driving you crazy! Or maybe shaving under your arms leaves painful bumps, so that you keep your arms down at all times.
And let’s be real: hardly anyone enjoys shaving their legs. Who likes:
- The yoga-master effort to reach everywhere?
- The time it takes to do it?
- The occasional cuts (and toilet paper dabs)?
- Those missed spots that you can see and feel?
There’s an alternative to unwanted hair: painless laser hair removal in Leawood. At Regain Functional Medicine + Aesthetics, we have 2 cutting-edge lasers that get rid of those annoying (and sometimes embarrassing) hairs. Book a consultation, and let’s not split hairs about your look. Let’s get rid of them!
Laser Hair Removal Doesn’t Remove Hair
Can a laser permanently remove hair? Yes…and no. This may sound contradictory, but with the way that laser hair removal works, it doesn’t destroy the hair.
How Laser Hair Removal Diminishes Unwanted Hair
The lasers used in laser hair removal in Leawood emit intense light beams directed at each hair. Melanin in the hair gives the laser a target. As the laser hits the melanin, the light energy becomes heat energy. This thermal impact travels through the hair shaft and into the hair bulb.
Once there, the heat destroys the dermal papilla—the part of the hair follicle that feeds the hair bulb and generates new hair. The damaged hair follicles now can’t grow new hair. Once the existing hair falls out, voilà—the hair is gone permanently.

More Than Aesthetics
Laser hair removal can diminish the presence of unwanted hair almost anywhere. Our patients arrive from Leawood, Lenexa, Prairie Village, Kansas City, and all across the metro area for more reasons than just improving their looks.
Hygiene Control
Excess hair can trap dirt, sweat, and bacteria, which often lead to skin issues. Removing hair can reduce the risk of bacterial infections, body odors, and skin irritation.
Athletic Performance
Laser hair removal in Leawood can reduce drag, friction, and sweat, which usually improves athletic performance. It can also prevent chafing and ingrown hairs.
Time and Money
Laser hair removal can save time and money by eliminating the need for shaving, waxing, or plucking.
Skin Health
Removing hair can make skin smoother and softer by removing dead skin cells, improving blood circulation, and stimulating collagen production.
Regain’s Power-Pair
At Regain, our expert aestheticians will use 1 of 2 laser modalities to remove the hair you don’t want.
Motus AZ
The Motus AZ is a game-changing advancement in laser hair removal, offering safe and effective treatment for all skin types.
It uses Alexandrite laser technology, which has a reputation for precision. The Motus AZ system combines the Alexandrite laser with Moveo technology. This delivers fast, painless energy that removes unwanted hair while reducing the risk of side effects.
This is especially exciting for individuals with darker skin tones. They previously couldn’t benefit from Alexandrite laser hair removal due to compatibility issues with their complexion. With the Motus AZ, everyone can experience long-lasting, safe hair removal.
Motus AZ+
The Motus AZ+ combines an innovative Skinclusive Alexandrite tip with an Nd
laser to deliver effective and safe treatments for all skin tones.
It features a large 20mm sapphire tip and contact cooling, allowing it to smoothly glide over the skin while ensuring 100% energy absorption.
This design allows for higher energy transfer compared to traditional lasers, without causing damage to surrounding tissues. Motus AZ+ gradually and precisely delivers its energy to the targeted hairs. With Moveo technology also included, the system works virtually painlessly thanks to low-power pulses and multiple passes over the area.
The treatment provides fast, uniform results that prioritize safety for every patient.

Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle
There’s a reason that you may need several sessions of laser hair removal in Leawood to achieve your goals. The location, color, and thickness of your hair all influence how well the laser works. The hair growth cycle affects all of these, as the laser is most effective during specific stages.
Understanding these phases helps guide the timing of laser treatments. By having laser hair removal during the anagen phase, the majority of hair is targeted for optimal results.
Anagen (Growth Phase)
In the anagen phase, cells in the hair root divide rapidly, causing the hair to grow. This is when the hair follicles are rich in both protein and melanin—the pigment that gives hair its color.
Because the laser targets melanin, hair in the anagen phase is most responsive to laser treatment. Approximately 85% of your hair follicles are in this active growth phase at any given time, making this the ideal stage for laser hair removal.
Catagen (Transition Phase)
After the growth phase, hair enters the catagen phase, also known as the transition phase. During this stage, the hair stops growing and detaches from the blood supply which nourished it.
Catagen lasts around 2 to 3 weeks, and only about 5% of your body hair will be in this phase at any time. Since the hair is no longer actively growing or producing melanin, it becomes less receptive to laser energy.
Telogen (Resting Phase)
Telogen is the final stage of the hair growth cycle, also known as the resting phase. In this phase, the hair has stopped growing and begins to shed naturally as the follicle prepares to restart the cycle.
Hair can stay in the telogen phase for varying amounts of time depending on the body area. It lasts about 100 days for scalp hair, but shorter or longer for other areas. Approximately 10% of your hair is in the telogen phase at any given moment. This phase makes laser hair removal less effective since there’s minimal melanin and the hair is not actively growing.

The Laser Hair Removal Process
When you come to Regain for laser hair removal in Leawood, our first step is to get to know you!
Consultation
Your Regain provider will meet with you one-on-one to discuss your concerns in a safe and judgment-free space. You’ll have the opportunity to talk openly, and we’ll make sure you feel heard and understood.
During your visit, we’ll also examine your treatment area to see which hair needs to go, and discuss which phase they’re in. If laser hair removal proves to be the best treatment for your concerns, we’ll schedule your appointment.
Preparation
You’ll need to shave the treatment area within the 24 hours before laser hair removal. This removal of hair above the skin allows the laser to precisely target the hair follicle.
Shaving allows the laser to penetrate the skin more directly and precisely. This reduces the risk of the laser energy being absorbed by the hair shaft instead of the follicle.
Various other hair removal methods, such as waxing or plucking, can negatively impact the laser’s ability to target the hair follicles. These methods remove the entire hair from the follicle, leaving nothing to target while leaving the follicle to create new hair.
Treatment
Before your treatment, your provider will review your recent medical history and current medications. We may ask you to remove any clothing, jewelry, or topical products like creams, lotions, or deodorants.
Your Regain laser provider will evaluate and mark the treatment area. We perform the procedure in 4×4 sections to ensure that every area is thoroughly treated according to protocol. As the treatment commences, you may feel sensation(s) that most patients describe as a warm spoon moving over the skin.
Aftercare
Optimal results require multiple sessions. Most people need 6 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. We recommend having a treatment every 6 to 8 weeks if you are targeting the face area.
For the mid-body region, we suggest treatments every 6 to 8 weeks. Laser hair removal treatment for the lower body area usually requires a set of sessions spaced every eight to 10 weeks.
Once you’re done with your series of treatments, we recommend the following aftercare tips:
- Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment to help ensure that your skin stays properly hydrated, and continue to do so afterward.
- For discomfort, apply cold compresses for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, several times a day to soothe the skin and prevent swelling. Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least a week after treatment. Your skin is more fragile after laser hair removal and is more prone to hyperpigmentation.
- Apply sunscreen SPF 30+ daily to treated areas.
- Wear loose-fitting clothes, wide-brimmed hats, and large sunglasses when outdoors for 7 to 14 days.
- Apply aloe or a soothing cream to help with redness and irritation.
- Avoid hot baths and showers, as well as swimming for 7 to 14 days.
- Refrain from wearing tight, restrictive garments over the treated area for 2 weeks.
- Wait until redness, swelling, and itching are gone to shave again.
